Beatrice Hunsdorfer is an acid tongued widow struggling to support herself and her two teenage daughters, Ruth, pretty but highly strung and prone to convulsions and Tillie, plain, painfully shy with a passion for science. In another of her get rich quick schemes Beatrice takes in a decrepit, demented lodger. Despite the girls attempts to fit in at school Beatrice wreaks a petty vengeance on all around her, culminating in Tillie’s award winning gamma ray marigolds science experiment. This play provides a timeless lesson that beautiful things can blossom in the harshest of surroundings.
A hugely influential Pulitzer Prize winning play, on its Broadway debut in 1968 it caught the attention of Paul Newman. He bought the movie rights so that his wife, Joanne Woodward, could play the role of the mother.
This powerful film, directed by Newman, was met with high acclaim.
